What is a Doctor of Audiology?

It’s good question. A lot of the time when I tell people that I have a doctorate they tend to assume that I’ve done a PhD or some kind of research. In actual fact, the doctorate I have a clinically based rather than research, which means I can apply it more to my day-to-day patient care.

Why hearing loss management is about more than which hearing aid you get

Hearing loss management is more than just choosing a hearing aid—it's about personalized care. Effective treatment involves fitting the right device and integrating communication strategies to ensure the best outcomes and quality of life.

Stigma and hearing loss- why is it so hard for younger people to get help?

Many young people with hearing difficulties avoid seeking help due to stigma. Vanity, ageism, and self-perception are key factors that deter them. Modern hearing aids have become more discreet and effective, but misconceptions persist. Hearing loss can affect anyone, and getting help is crucial for better quality of life.

Philanthropy

In 2011, Yovina visited Uganda on a medical mission which treated over 10,000 patients over 2 weeks. During this time, she assisted in the ENT department. Following this, Yovina volunteered with the Royal National Institute for the Deaf. This involved running servicing clinics to help service peoples hearing aids and solve any issues they might be having if they cannot make it to their local NHS Audiology Department.

Yovina has also worked as an Audiology Representative for the Teddy Bear Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. This programme helps children overcome fears or anxiety regarding health professionals and the hospital environment.

In 2020, Yovina had the opportunity to travel to Kijabe, Kenya with the Hear the World Foundation. At the AIC Kijabe Hospital, Yovina and a team of volunteers worked to train their audiology team on hearing technology and diagnostic testing techniques. During the week-long trip, thousands of patients from across Kenya were tested and treated for hearing loss.
